DARK MAIDEN & TALIA SMITH
SILENT HEART & SAMMIE PICKETT
The track at the farm was quiet this dark morning and both Talia and Sammie were thankful for that. Less of a chance of an issue with the colts... Sammie patted the Silent Heart as she jigged sideways on the track. This was one of the filly’s first few workouts at Firestone, and even though she had a much laid back personality, she couldn’t help but get excited or nervous, it was to be expected of a two year old. Dark Maiden was extremely new to the farm too, Carter just having got her a few weeks ago. She cantered on the track like it was nothing, like she had been doing it her whole life. The filly was heated already and Talia eased her back to a light canter. She was a powerhouse for sure but she didn't want to waste it. It would be a sham if the two year old lost steam and couldn't have another season. Carter was so elated to have both of the new fillies; he didn't want them going to waste.
Both fillies were moving along at a good click on their breeze and both girls eased up on the reins a little, allowing both Mai and Heather a little more speed around the first turn. They didn't need any urging at any point, particularly when there were other horses on the track to get away from. Heather’s ears flicked to the side, she almost looked bored but Sammie knew better.
The two fillies breezed down the backstretch without a problem and carefully made their way around the turn, Mai keeping a close eye on Heather. Two year old thoroughbreds, particularly taller ones like Heather, always have issues balancing themselves, even around a wide turn like on a track.
Sammie eased on the reins slightly out of the turn and the bay fillies used their powerful back ends to power forward. The wind ripping, the two fillies tore to the finish line and it was definitely a battle to the end. Heather’s already powerful hind end propelled her forwards, but Mai was having none of it. She took the lead by a neck. The finish line came way too fast for the jockey’s taste, both fillies chomping at the bit to have another dual.
Both Sammie and Talia sat up and leaned back, trying to slow their mounts. Once they did, Sammie sighed lightly, patting Heather’s sweaty neck. The filly didn't slow, she kept a brisk walk up and Sammie rolled her eyes. Heather definitely felt good for her first race, and Talia felt like Mai was roaring to go again.
